That's kind of up to you, within reason, as is the interpretation of your character's having volunteered. If you want to have had your character had a vision of one of the higher powered beings and they gave off the impression to that god or goddess that they would be interested, then you can say that they were selected based on the perception the god or goddess received from the interaction. But, at the end of the day, your character is on the island willingly, as far as they know. If you feel they had to be brainwashed, then they were brainwashed.
Ahh, yes, well don't worry about that. Arva's got it covered for you. Children of single parents willing to volunteer will be taken into Arva's hidden temple where they will be well-fed, clothed, kept warm, entertained, and will help her raise the Children of the Island. Because they weren't born here, they will continue to age at a normal rate, but once they've turned eighteen, she'll give them the choice of staying to help her or going out onto the island to join the project, if their parent is a part of the project long enough to merit that. These children will be allowed to see their parent via special technology in the temple and, although they will not be able to communicate directly with their parent, if their parent wishes to send them a message at any time, they need only contact Arva directly and she will be more than happy to deliver said message to them. Don't worry, they are safe and will be in good hands.
Not at all! The gods and goddesses actually feed off of positive energy and if love and sexual satisfaction aren't positive energy, then we don't know what is. Your character might not be able to help grow the population in a traditional way, but they can still feed the power of the higher powers by being sexually active or by developing romantic feelings for another person in an asexual manner, so please do not feel discouraged about bringing in these characters. They have just as much a place and role in this game as the heterosexual characters willing to breed. Heterosexual characters that have no interest in helping to repopulate but would rather have sex for fun are powerful in the exact same way. They're not procreating to sustain the population, but they're giving power to the gods and goddesses so that they can bring in more potential volunteers, so they're just as important and encouraged to join!
No. Arva will inherently know whether your character wishes to create new life or not in the midst of any given heterosexual encounter, just as she will know (as long as your character knows) whether or not certain traits (special powers, for example) should be passed down to those offspring. If your character just wants to have sex for fun, Arva will know that and she will not permit conception in that encounter, so no worries!
That is entirely up to the player. If you wish to have your female character still unable to conceive, then that will remain static for you. However, if you wish for her to be able to, you can absolutely have her conceive and you can approach this one of two ways:
Again, that is entirely up to the player. If you wish to have your male character still unable to father children due to a birth defect or a superpower that would be bad to spread to a new generation, then that will remain static for you. However, if you wish for him to be able to, just like with the question above, you can absolutely have him father children and you can approach this one of two ways:
At this time, only characters with female bodies and sex organs will be permitted to conceive children. M-preg is not allowed.
No, not necessarily. We understand that some characters are just meant for monogamy, at least on some level, and those characters will be extremely helpful in this process. If two characters are exclusively procreating with one another, then they have a lot of power in population control in that respect. In addition, because Arva controls ability to conceive in the female volunteers, if you want your characters to be able to sleep around without spreading the gene pool too thin, you can pick and choose who your character can actually impregnate or be impregnated by and it's easily handwaved as the will of Arva.
Yes and no. Text-based interaction, like comm posts, will be auto-translated for your character into their native language and for all of the other characters into theirs. In person, verbal communication will not be auto-translated until the setting on the character's bracelet is activated to do so. With that said, unless your character is especially technologically inclined, they will probably not find this setting and it would be best to reach out to another character in the game. For reference, Cisco Ramon (The Flash) was the first to encounter a non-English speaking person and find this setting with some fiddling, but he will probably not be the last.
he clothes on their back and anything that they would normally have on their person. That said, if they would normally carry a weapon or special gadget of some kind, it won’t be functional until seven days from their arrival. Guns won’t be loaded, crossbows won’t have their arrows, knives will be dull, a sonic screwdriver makes noise but basically accomplishes nothing, etc. Any functional weapons must be made with the supplies found on the island.
The higher powers of the Island of Paradiso are the gods and goddesses of the unknown planet on which the island is located. More detailed information about them can be found on the setting page.
No, they are not the only ones, although they are the only ones that live there full time. Now and again, you might find the higher powers on the island or on the network and you can always reach out to them, but depending on their mood or your request, they may or may not feel like actually responding to you. Again, more detailed information about the gods and goddesses of the Island of Paradiso can be found on the setting page, and if you'd like to request an interaction with one of them in play, in a log, please drop a line in the mod drop box and we'll do the best that we can to accommodate the request.
At this time, we have two of the higher powers open for play and are taking volunteers under consideration. If you would like to volunteer, please drop us a line in the mod drop box with an email address for us to reach you and we will discuss in further detail if we would like to take you up on the offer. Please know that these characters, if you decide to take them on, will not be subject to activity checks, but if they are completely under-utilized, we reserve the right to take them away from you and offer the role to someone else. You also will not have the luxury of choosing their personality or powers or played by; all of these things are pre-determined. If you are still interested in potentially taking on one of these roles, please check the taken list for information on who is available and then leave a comment for us and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
They can be lost, yes. If this happens, we're sorry about your luck. Stolen, yes, but only with your permission as the player. No, these items will not be replaced, so if you don't want to lose them to newer characters who didn't awaken with them, you'd better keep them close.
Yes, absolutely! PLEASE DO. Also, because these things, in theory, would not be built using magic of any kind (generally) they would be able to be used by multiple characters. Some things can be created with magic and used by the group at large, sure, but things like whole buildings? Sorry, guys, that's not gonna work out when your character tries. Y'all are gonna have to build shelter the old fashioned way. Can you create a running water/electric/water heating/water filtrating system with magic once you've got all the tools to maintain it? Maybe. Ask the mods and we'll let you know.
They get to keep them, within reason. Your character that can teleport is free to pop around the island to their heart’s content, but they can’t teleport out, nor can they take anyone with them, for example. Healers, however...sorry about you. You can heal yourself, still, but you can’t heal anyone else. Oops. Your powers are yours and you can’t share them, no matter how heroic you like to be.
Nope, sorry. Humanoids only. If your character is normally a cartoon humanoid, feel free to give them a human PB and have at it.
As stated in the rules, at this time we are not looking for villains and children (anyone under the age of eighteen) would not be permitted in the game. In a more broad sense, you could potentially play one of the children of the island (which you can read about in more detail in the rules), should one of them crop up. This section will be on the taken list as soon as the first child of the island is made available and they will show up as a blank template character with no PB, no name (unless the biological parents named the child before giving he or she away to Arva), and only the biological parents' names listed. If you do not see the Children of the Island section or any open characters in it, then there are not any available at this time.
If your character dies in game, you can appeal to the mods for a regeneration of that character and we will discuss this with players on a case by case basis.
Great question! There is a points and rewards system in place, which is visible only to players already in the game. All types of IC activity have point values and you, as a player, can claim points for your character's activity. Once you've saved up some points, you can also redeem those points to receive gifts from the higher powers.
Drop us a line in the mod drop box and we’ll include your question and our answer in the FAQ (unless you ask us specifically not to, in which case your comment will remain screened and we’ll still answer you. We’re nice like that).
